sugar for coating, about 1-2 cupsCombine gelatin with ½ cup cold water and the juice from half and orange. Set aside for 5-10 minutes.
1 Combine
¾ cup water with sugar. Cut peel from orange half in large chunks, and add that to sugar mixture. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, then remove and discard orange peel, and add food coloring and extract.
1 Add
gelatin mixture to syrup, and stir until completely dissolved.
1 Pour
into an 8x8 or 11x7 pan lined with greased foil. Chill for several hours.
1 Turn
out chilled block onto cutting board well coated in sugar. Spread more sugar over the top. Cut into cubes.
1 Place
cubes in a dish filled with sugar, and toss to coat. Chill several hours, up to 2-3 days. Use a colander to remove excess sugar from gumdrops before serving.
